Matcha Butterbeer: For Harry Potter Lovers

Jules Reyes

Our matcha-fied muggle interpretation of this popular wizard drink is perfect for Halloween or a Harry Potter movie marathon! A creamy matcha whipped topping is paired with butterscotch-infused cream soda for a sweet, refreshing drink.

What is butterbeer?

If you’re not familiar with Harry Potter, then you probably don’t know much about butterbeer. Butterbeer is a creamy brew enjoyed by the characters in the Harry Potter books. It was served at several different locations that students of Hogwarts frequented. The flavor is described as a “less-sickly butterscotch.”

What’s in matcha butterbeer?

In the books, butterbeer is made with just butterscotch, sugar, and water. However, we muggles make it differently; here’s what you’ll need to make this matcha butterbeer:

In the books, butterbeer had a very slight alcohol content that would get the house-elves drunk, but this muggle version is alcohol-free (despite its name!)

How do you make matcha butterbeer?

Making butterbeer is easy! There are two parts to this recipe: the whipped matcha topping and the soda. Let’s go over how to make each:

To begin, we’ll make the matcha topping. First, combine the matcha latte mix with water to make a matcha shot. You can combine them using an electric whisk, chasen (bamboo whisk) or by shaking vigorously in a jar until the sugar in the matcha latte mix is dissolved.

Next, Add the heavy cream to the bowl of a stand mixer, followed by the matcha shot, and beat the mixture until soft peaks from, about 5 minutes. Once you have achieved soft peaks, add the butterscotch topping and powdered sugar, then gently mix using a rubber spatula.

Next, make the butterbeer! Gather the cream soda, butterscotch topping, and butter extract. Add the butterscotch topping to a bowl, followed by the butter extract, then add about ¼ cup of the cream soda and stir. This ensures the topping and extract is thoroughly combined with the soda. Now, add the remaining cream soda, stir, and divide the mixture between 2 glasses. Top with a generous amount of the matcha whipped topping. Last but not least, dust the top with extra matcha!

This recipe makes 2 mugs of butterbeer.
