Morita-san's Blend Ceremonial Matcha
For almost 50 years, Morita-san has carefully honed his craft as one of Japan’s premier tea masters. Here, he has hand-blended Okumidori, Saemidori, Yabukita, and Asatsuyu cultivars to achieve a wonderfully rounded flavor profile.
In 1969 Morita-san participated in Japan's National Tea Examination tournament and became the first person in history to win on his first appearance. He was only 19 at the time, and also received an award from the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for being the youngest person ever to win the tournament. Since then, Morita-san continued to learn about techniques and the spiritual aspect of tea screening and appraisal and in 1994 he achieved the ninth grade which was the highest rank for tea appraiser at that time.
"Okumidori has its refined gentleness, Saemidori has its fashionable sense. Both of them are elegant, beautifully colored and subtly sweet cultivars without sharp flavor. We usually blend several cultivars three-dimensionally to bring out the stereoscopic effect and stability, but especially for this blend, we are planning to use Okumidori and Saemidori as our base, and Yabukita and Asatsuyu as our accent."
